Can Anti-Aging Creams Make You Age Faster?

Anti Aging Creams

These days, skin aging is not considered a serious problem anymore as it was before. Advances in the field of anti-aging gave us the opportunity to try out effective anti aging products and not only that, they are made available for those people who need them. However, it is important that you should be aware of the ingredients contained in them as, if you are not careful, they might result to premature aging.

There are some items on beauty creams that, instead of cure, might bring problems to you and your skin if you apply on them. Watch out for the following ingredients that can make your skin age fast.

  • Hydroquinone

Anti-aging creams with hydroquinone can lead to skin dryness and itchiness. Dryness and itchiness are two common intrinsic signs of aging. Therefore, if you start and continuously use cream with this chemical, your skin would age fast.

  • Alcohol

Although alcohol can be used for sterilization and has pore minimizing effect, anti-aging creams that contain alcohol can cause dry skin and make it prone to wrinkles thus can age skin faster.

  • Petrolatum

Studies show that although moisturizers and lotions containing this chemical can cover fine lines and locks in moisture, it clogs the pores at the same time. This would further lead to dull looking, acne-infested skin which are part of skin aging.

  • Hormones

Sure hormones can temporarily reduce wrinkles and fine lines that is why they are being used in some anti-aging skincare products. They make your skin younger looking. The negative side is that you can have darker skin with spots because hormones can easily oxidized when expose under the sun.

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

This ingredient is known to remove oils and is commonly found in shampoos, toothpaste, garage floor cleaners and, unbelievable but true, it can be found in anti-aging creams as well. SLS cause reduction of moisture level in your skin which results to dryness – a sign of aging.

  • Propylene glycol (PEG)

This has been used on different skin care products including anti-aging creams as moisturizer and emulsifier. However, it may also cause skin irritation.

  • Soap Base Components

These are more common added to cleansers to remove oil. However, doing so would potentially damage the natural protective layer of your skin which if done continuously, would cause fast aging.

The key to healthier skin is still up to us. We just have to be careful on what we buy and what we apply on our skin. We should check the labels on each of the product we decide to purchase and put on our skin. It is time that we take responsibility on ourselves and remember the popular quote that says “Prevention is better than cure.”
